  Rats exposed to hypoxia also had increased numbers of muscularized peripheral pulmonary arteries.  None of the parameters characterizing hypoxic pulmonary hypertension was influenced by adrenalectomy. Rats exposed to hypoxia had increased values of hematocrit. In chronically hypoxic sham-operated rats, hematocrit values were higher than in adrenalectomized rats exposed to hypoxia.We found that lungs isolated from adrenalectomized rats perfused with blood obtained from adrenalectomized blood donors were less reactive to acute hypoxia and angiotensin II injections than sham-operated controls. In contrast, the effects of acute challenges and chronic exposure to hypoxia in vivo were not affected by adrenalectomy. Adrenalectomized rats tolerated exposure to the hypoxic environment well. Only their hematocrit values were slightly lower than in hypoxic nonadrenalectomized hypoxic rats.

The finding of low reactivity to hypoxia in isolated lungs from adrenalectomized rats is consistent with results of our previous study, which showed that physiological doses of dexamethasone and aldosterone increased the reactivity of saline albumin-perfused, isolated rat lungs.
