Statistical analysis: Results are presented as means ± SEM. They were statistically evaluated by ttest, one-way ANOVA and two-way ANOVA with repeated measurements. The Scheffe method was used for simultaneous multiple comparisons. Statistical analyses were made by the statistical software StatView 4.53 (Abacus Concepts, Berkeley, California, USA). Differences were considered significant at P<0.05. Acute effects of hypoxia and angiotensin II in isolated lungs: Acute effects were studied in five isolated lung preparations obtained from adrenalectomized lung donors perfused with blood from adrenalectomized blood donors. Control lungs (n=5, sham-operated lung donors) were perfused with blood from intact blood donors. The pressor responses to hypoxia were severely depressed in lungs from adrenalectomized rats (Figure 1). The baseline perfusion pressure was higher after hypoxic challenges in control than in adrenalectomized rats. It increased from 13.6±0.4 mmHg at the beginning of perfusion to 15.0±0.3 mmHg at the end of the experiment (P<0.05, paired t test). In adrenalectomized rats the baseline perfusion pressure did not change throughout the experiment. It was 14.0±0.5 mmHg before and 14.4±0.4 mmHg after hypoxic challenges.
